The road that goes up to the upper mall not to far from our hotel. All road in Shimla go either up or down - flat roads are almost totally nonexistent in this hillside village. It was adopted as the capital of the Raj in 1864. It is now the capital of Himachal Pradesh - a "state" in India.

This is further up on the road to the "Upper Mall." There are three levels of mall - upper, middle and lower. The upper mall was originally reserved for the British and the citizens of Shimla were not allow there. Now everyone does their shopping on all three levels but the upper mall is more for tourists - and the lower mall has more practical things.

Rajiv and his lovely wife Trisha are our contacts in Shimla. They are both practicing lawyers and delightful people. They know everyone and can get anything done. This picture was taken in Rajiv's office - a small climb down from the upper mall.

These are the steps back up from Rajiv's office. The gentleman climbing the steps in front of me is a Tibetan porter. There are very few cars in Shimla and almost anything you want moved is done by a porter. They can carry amazing amounts and it is not uncommon to see them carrying several air-conditioners on their backs walking up the road.

The classroom in the Oberoi Clarke Hotel. We use it for class, study place, yoga and classical dance classroom and posting messages on the white board.

Same classroom from the other side. Outside the window you can see the High Court building and anyone who is anyone arriving and departing by helicoptor.

This is the Tibetan Refugee Handloom Shop owned by Tenzin. He was so glad to see Louise. Since it was the 10th day of the 4th month, a very auspicious day we were invited to a Tibetan Festival that was taking place nearby.

Shimla's version of Starbucks. The latte was actually pretty good.
Espresso machines make the same sound world over and so do the people taking the first sip of really good coffee.
mmmmm......

A morning visitor to our patio. He was an imp and his antics reminded me of our kitten Maggie Mae.

He was soon joined by his friends!
